Echo Grange remembers long-time Secretary Sara Tormey

Sara (Ferro) Tormey, 98, of Mansfield, widow of the late John Tormey, died Wednesday Dec. 12, 2012 at Windham Hospital. She was born in Astoria, NY, the fifth of six daughters.  Moving to Connecticut in 1919, she graduated from Windham High School in 1931.  During World War II she worked for Pratt & Whitney and served as Air Raid Warden in Mansfield.  For seventeen years she was employed in the Electro-Motive office and for eleven years at UConn’s Accounts Payable office.  Her talents were many including her interest in theater groups,  Evelyn’s Dance Studio, and especially a found talent in art and crafting.  She was a charter member of the Willimantic Paint and Palettes Club, and taught crafts at adult evening classes in Willimantic and Mansfield.  She joined  Echo Grange in 1948 and was secretary of the Grange for 49 years.  But her greatest accomplishment was the unconditional love and support she always gave to her family.

Among her survivors are her children Caroline Rowe of Mansfield, John Tormey  and his wife Norma of NY, and daughter in law Suzanne Tormey of Columbia; her grandchildren David and Stephen Rowe of VT, Kathy Simonds of RI and Susan Gawlak of North Windham, Michael Tormey, Denise Duplisea of Willimantic, Joanne Frederick of Mansfield, and John Tormey III of NY.  She also leaves their loving spouses, 14 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and several beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son Charles and sisters Rose, Angie, Nancy, Madeline and Mary.   A special thanks to Dr. Barry, her staff, Dr. Gilligan and Doug for years of caring.

Her family will receive relatives and friends on Friday Dec. 14thbetween 6:00 and 8:00pm at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9:00am at St. Joseph Church, 99 Jackson St., Willimantic, with assembly at the church.  Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Windham.  In lieu of flowers, her family suggests memorial donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,   www.stjude.org.
