| AUGUST 21, 2014 -- For the past 130 years, Cheshire locals have been competing to grow the tallest sunflower or the largest pumpkin, and even bake the biggest apple pie. The Cheshire Grange Fair will once again be accepting entries into their baking, artwork, photography, sewing, and vegetable competitions. First, second, and third prize winners receive monetary rewards. People of all ages can submit their work in the competitions. There are categories for children and adults.
An entry form is required and can be found in the 2014 Grange Fair book, available at R.W. Hine Hardware, Town Hall, Cheshire Library, Arisco Farms, Tower Farms, Carmody’s Vegetable Farm, Peter’s II Restaurant, and Dietrich Gardens, or by visiting www.cheshiregrange.org. Fill out the form and send it to the address listed, then bring entries to the Grange Hall tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 22, where they will be judged and displayed for all to see during the weekend.
The Cheshire Grange Fair celebrates Cheshire’s agricultural past and present, and this year marks the 130th anniversary. The fair will take place this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23 and 24, at the Grange Hall, 44 Wallingford Rd. Livestock, flowers, vegetables, artwork, baking, and various other entries will be on display. There will be a food booth, bake sale, raffle, educational booths, children’s games and activities, a bounce house, a roast beef dinner, a real old-fashioned auction, and more.
What do goats have in common with the White Tailed Deer? Learn the answer on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the fair, as naturalist Eric Nelson of Cheshire will explain and show examples of actual White Tailed Deer anatomy.
There will also be a display of Connecticut invasive plants by master gardener Dawn Harrison on Saturday, as well as wagon rides sponsored by Cheshire’s own Drazen Orchards from 2 to 4 p.m. Rides will begin at the Grange Fair, go down to Drazen Orchards, and back to the fair.
World War II jeeps and farm tractors will be on display at the fair, and there will be the annual children’s events, free pie eating contest and water balloon contest.
On both Saturday and Sunday, entertainment for children will be offered for a small fee, including a bounce house, bean bag toss, fishing pond and, newly added to the children’s games, ‘Farmer Mini Golf’ and ring toss.
Also, free crafts for kids activities will be held on both Saturday and Sunday!
On Sunday, visit with Connecticut State Trooper Chris Torrini and his partner Union of the K-9 Unit.
All are welcome. The fair is free to attend.
