| AUGUST 19, 2010 -- For many, the end of August signals the waning days of summer and a return to classrooms and books. But for thousands of others in the area, it marks the return of an annual tradition -- the Bridgewater Country Fair in Bridgewater.
That means three days of merriment, including rides, good eats and interesting agricultural exhibits.
"I've been coming to the fair for more than 20 years," said Dan Baroody, a resident of Sherman. It's charming and bucolic -- a real old New England rural town atmosphere. And, they have the best roast beef around."
This year's fair kicks off on Friday and runs through the weekend on the grounds behind the firehouse on Route 133. The event is sponsored by the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department.
"My family loves going because it's a fundraiser for the fire department and being a resident of Brookfield, one of the areas the department responds to, we feel that it's important," Maureen Spies said. "It's a terrific country fair complete with a great parade, crafts, animals and rides."
Opening ceremonies begin on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and are highlighted by a parade featuring area firemen. There will also be pig racing and a performance from the musical group Flashback. Additional special features include junior dairy and beef shows on Saturday and a Tractor Mac children's show on Sunday. Events available all weekend include a petting zoo, kiddie and animal rides, food and refreshment stands, and art and photo exhibits.
The Bridgewater Fire Department is manned by volunteers and the town is only one of two in the state where no town taxes are used to fund the fire department, which requires the organization to host a range of fundraisers to support its annual budget.
In addition to maintaining its building and grounds, the department's main expenses are equipment maintenance and replacement.
The fair attracts people from all over Connecticut and beyond. Among its fans is Scott LeRoy of Danbury.
"I don't live in the area that the fire department services," LeRoy said, "but I enjoy the fair and feel that it's important to support all civic organizations like the fire department, which has such a vital mission."
