JANUARY 5, 2010 -- Lyme Grange member Ted Powell III, 56, of Colchester, received the Heritage Award for his volunteer work in fairs at the International Association of Fairs and Expositions convention, held Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 in Las Vegas.
Powell is the first person from Connecticut to receive the award, and the second from New England. Sponsored by Haas & Wilkerson Insurance, the award honors five individuals yearly with a trophy and $1,000 cash to be presented at the IAFE annual convention.
Powell is a 16-year member of the Hamburg Fair in Lyme, where he has served as head of livestock, vice president and currently serves as president. He also provides security at night and serves as concessions manager. Powell has served with the Hebron fair for 12 years, four as vice president. He was in charge of the grounds in 2005 when the fair had to be rebuilt. He has served with the Chester fair for 12 years, Haddam Neck fair for five years and Terryville fair for four years. He is still a member of the Brooklyn fair, where he runs the swine show, and the Durham fair.
Powell is a member of the Association of Connecticut Fairs, where he serves on the Board of Directors. He is also on the IAFE zone 1 planning committee and is a member of the Lyme Grange. He is employed at Bourdeau's Pheasant Farm in Salem.
"Fairs are good for communities," Powell said. "Fairs present a chance for communities to come together for fun and good times."
